Comedian Sarah Silverman recently spent five days in the ICU suffering from a life-threatening case of epiglottitis. The epiglottis is a flap of tissue that sits at the base of the tongue, protecting the windpipe. Epiglottitis occurs when that tissue becomes inflamed, resulting in swelling that blocks air to the lungs. A bacterial infection is the most common cause.
